7 tips: How to prevent sick leave

Did you know that 66% believe their work has contributed to their sick leave, often due to stress or high workload? This is shown in a recent study conducted by Försäkringskassan. As a manager, it’s crucial to work proactively to prevent sick leave and create a sustainable work environment. Here are seven concrete tips for how you can enhance well-being and reduce the risk of sick leave in your workplace. 

Survey based on the experiences of individuals on sick leave

For the first time in many years, Försäkringskassan has conducted a nationwide survey to map the experiences of individuals on sick leave and the support they receive when returning to work. The results provide valuable insights into the impact of the work environment and highlight what is needed to effectively support employees in their recovery and reintegration.

The survey shows that:

  • 66% of the respondents report that their work has contributed to their sick leave, particularly due to stress and high workload (51%).
  • Among individuals with mental health diagnoses, 85% state that their work has contributed, often through stress (78%) and high workload.
  • 64% believe they receive the support they need to a high or moderate degree, while 21% feel they don’t receive sufficient support from their employer.
  • 69% report that their employer has made some adjustments to facilitate their return to work.

Although many workplaces make adjustments to facilitate the return-to-work process, the statistics show that employers still need to enhance the work environment to prevent sick leave. Investing in preventive measures is cost-effective, as the costs associated with sick leave are often higher than, for example, sick pay.

The magazine Chef interviewed Cecilia Eek, project manager at Försäkringskassan, who believes that more managers need to support their employees.

– Although work is likely not the only factor contributing to sick leave, it shows that the work environment is a crucial issue and that preventive efforts can make a significant difference, she says.

As an employer, you have a responsibility to engage in preventative work and apply proven strategies to create a healthy work environment. By taking an acting role in minimizing work-related health issues, you can enhance employee well-being and reduce the risk of long-term illness.

How to prevent sick leave:
  • Work proactively to improve the work environment

    Since stress and high workload are among the leading causes of sick leave (especially among those with mental health diagnoses), it’s crucial to balance tasks and prevent work overload. Regular conversations with employees are an effective way to discuss the work situation and detect early signs of stress.

  • Reduce strain injuries

    To minimize the risk of strain injuries, the workplace should be ergonomically designed. This can involve everything from providing the right equipment and standing desks to educating employees on ergonomic working methods.

  • Make individual adjustments

    If you notice that someone at the workplace is starting to show signs of mental health issues or need support to return to work after a sick leave, it’s important for you as a manager to make early adjustments to their tasks. This could include changing responsibilities, increasing flexibility in work hours, or allowing breaks when needed.

69% has received work adjustments

According to Försäkringskassan’s survey, two out of three respondents state that they have received some form of adjustment from their employer. The most common adjustment is changes in job tasks. Other adjustments include support from colleagues, flexible work hours, and the possibility of taking breaks more often.

  • Promote an open culture


    Clear and empathetic communication is essential for your employees to feel safe discussing mental health and workload. Regular one-on-one meetings can give employees the space to express their needs, thoughts, and any concerns.

  • Create guidelines for handling conflict and harassment


    Prevent work-related conflicts by establishing clear guidelines on how they should be managed if they occur. This is important for promoting a positive and inclusive work environment.

  • Promote work-life balance


    By offering flexible work hours and remote work options, your employees can more easily adjust their work to meet personal needs and health requirements, which in turn reduces the risk of burnout and long-term sick leave.

  • Predict sick leave

    Companies that actively work with employee surveys can, through data and trend analysis, identify risk factors before sick leave becomes a reality. By acting on early warning signs, you can create targeted interventions needed to prevent sick leave.
